Board Engagement

Board Engagement is a signature program of Emerge Broward that provides insight and experience in nonprofit board service. Open only to Emerge Broward members, the purpose of the Board Engagement program is to provide community-minded young professionals the opportunity to serve on a local nonprofit Board of Directors.

As part of the program, selected EB participants will receive training regarding the role of a board member, the basics of nonprofit governance, and best practices in board service. We partner with the Community Foundation of Broward, whose experienced consultants provide these training sessions. Additionally, participants who successfully complete the trainings will be matched with a local nonprofit Board of Directors and serve an annual term as a board member.

Support has been provided by the Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward

For Emerge Broward Members:

Board Engagement participants will be selected through an application process. Any Emerge Broward member is eligible to apply. The most qualified candidates are members who have actively taken part in Emerge Broward activities and demonstrate an interest in learning what it’s like to serve on a nonprofit board.

Selected participants will be required to:

  • Attend all Board Engagement training workshops and meetings
  • Attend the Nonprofit Matching Fair, where you will have the opportunity to meet the participating Nonprofit organizations
  • Serve on your assigned Board of Directors during your annual term and attend all scheduled board meetings and events
  • Remain a current Emerge Broward member in good standing

Successful completion of the Board Engagement training workshops is required to be placed on a board. Please note: A Board Match is not guaranteed. Additionally, each nonprofit organization has its own internal approval process.

Applications for the 2024-2025 program are now closed. If you are interested in joining the wait list to apply for next year's program, please complete the Board Engagement Interest Form

For Nonprofit Organizations:

Year after year, Board Engagement participants have proven to be the top talent in our community and bring new perspectives, ideas, and energy to existing nonprofit boards. We are happy to extend the opportunity for your nonprofit organization to apply to participate in the next iteration of the Board Engagement program.

The matching process heavily considers your need to diversify your board. Whether its attracting younger board members who bring fresh ideas, have specific professional skill sets, come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, or all three – the Board Engagement Program will help you cultivate a board that's truly representative of the communities you serve.
